Arabic Name: سُمَّانَى شَائِعَةٌ 
Status in Kuwait: common passage migrant and scarce summer visitor; has bred and probably breeds annually. The first breeding record goes back to 1967 when discovered breeding at Ahmadi. It also has bred in Sulaibiya pivot irrigation farms and also in 2000 bred at Abdaly farms and reported breeding in the of the country in Wafra farms.
Nominate coturnix Europe and North-west Africa to Mongolia and North-east India. Winters in Africa and Central and South India. ssp. conturbans Azores. ssp. inopinata Cape Verde Islands. ssp. africana sub-Saharan Africa, Mauritius, Comoros, and Madagascar. ssp erlangeri East and North Africa. Some of the subspecies above may merit full species status.
